The cycling routes that will be used for the 2024 Olympic Games—which will take place in and around the French capital city of Paris—are now available on Strava. Road cycling offers a unique opportunity for athletes of all abilities to ride the routes that some of the very best athletes in the world will compete on next July.

Road cycling at Paris 2024 kicks off with the Men's and Women's Time Trials on Saturday, July 27th. This is followed by the Men's Road Race on Saturday, August 3rd, and the Women's Road Race on Sunday, August 4th.

Men's and Women's Time Trial (Event date: Saturday 27th July)

For the first time in Olympic history, the 35 men and women competing in the Time Trial will do so over the same 20 mile / 32.4km course. With just 364 feet / 111m of climbing on the entire route, the time trial will be out-and-out sprint. Starting at the Esplanade des Invalides, competitors will cross the River Seine at the Pont de Sully and then head out to the Bois de Vincennes. Turning at the Institut National du Sport, de l'Expertise et de la Performance (INSEP), from there it is a straight sprint back to the finish line on Pont Alexandre III.

Men's Road Race (Event date: Saturday 3rd August)

The first 3.1 miles / 5km of both the men's and women's road race will be a symbolic procession, beginning at the Trocadéro before passing the Eiffel Tower, the Seine and Les Invalides. The 169.6 mile / 273km race-proper begins on Rue Gay-Lussac in the 5th arrondissement. From there, the riders head out to the spectacular Chevreuse Valley, where a series of short, sharp climbs will test a pack coming off the back of a gruelling Tour de France. Heading back into Paris, competitors face a tough final 31 miles / 50km, including three loops of the iconic Butte Montmarte (0.6 miles / 1km at 6.5%). A tight, twisting, cobbled segment, Montmarte - and the iconic Sacré Coeur basilica - represent the final challenge before the race to the finish line at Trocadéro.

Women's Road Race (Event date: Sunday 4th August)

Like the men's race, the women's road race starts out from Trocadéro in a symbolic procession that passes the landmarks of Paris. Five kilometers in, the race proper begins, with the 90 athletes (for the first time in Olympic history there are the same number of Men and Women competing in road cycling) heading out on a 101 mile / 163km course played out predominantly in the Chevreuse Valley. With a series of challenging climbs along the route, including the Côte de Port-Royal (0.6 miles / 1km at 5%), Côte de Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse (1.3km at 6.3%) and Côte de Cernay-la-Ville (0.7 miles / 1.1km at 3.9%), the course will test the peloton before they head back into Paris - and tackle those cobbles on Butte Montmarte.

Unlike many Olympic events, if you are in Paris during the Games, it's worth remembering that the vast majority of the road cycling course is on public roads and so completely free for spectators. This includes the final climbs on Montmarte, as well as the run in to the Trocadéro finish line (note: the finish line is ticketed).
