The vast portion of the field rode back down the mountain to the team buses, which were expertly placed at the base of the climb - to ensure as quick of an exit from the race as possible. In comparison, we parked at the top of the climb, and it took us almost an hour and a half to get back down.

So this is where the chaos begins. Riders finish the race, then head back down - not a problem, right? That means they’ll have to share the road with the riders still to finish - but that’s not a problem. The interesting part occurs when the fans see the riders descending to their waiting buses, and they say - ooooh, I like that idea - let’s do that too! Pretty soon, hundreds and hundreds of riders are heading down the mountain while long ago dropped riders trudge slowly to the line and the sanctuary of the finish.

It’s nothing too terrible, but it does make for a situation where it is extremely helpful if everyone pays very close attention. It also helps if you can whistle. Whistling is a good way to keep heads up.
